Engineer from Novosibirsk Alexander Sysoyev in 1994 and did not suspect that the project to create a digital map of the capital of Siberia will grow multi-billion dollar business. 20 years later, in 2014, a free mobile mapping application 2GIS, according to research firm app Annie, took 9-th place in the ranking of the most downloaded in Russia, ahead of “Navigator” from “Yandex”. Almost mastered Russia, Sysoev is preparing to conquer the world: using partners the project is working in Kazakhstan and Belarus, Italy, UAE and Chile.

Started with the fact that the city telephone network of Novosibirsk wanted to create an electronic map of their networks (this was 1994, they were all on paper). Sysoev decided that this order suits him, and created the company “technograd plus”. “We agreed that an initiative for your money do and if it works, they’ll take him for a large system, he said in an interview . — Plan of the city we took a satellite image and as a result became the first private company in the country to have its own plan of the city.” To work on a plan for a telephone network “technograd plus” went almost two years with lots of different agreements and verification schemes on the ground. During the execution of the order for the telephone network in Novosibirsk in Sysoeva and the idea of “Doublegis” is a digital information guide, which combines the functionality of geographic information systems (GIS) and urban information system (GIS). “The concept was my idea, says Sysoyev. — It is based on free independently distributed the product of living through advertising: directory “Yellow pages”, transcribed into electronic form”. According to the businessman, he was one of the first who invented it: “It was good and bad at the same time, because the market is free, but nobody could understand what niche is and how to use it”.
The first version was released in 1999 on CD-ROM. In 2010-2011 Sysoev, having mastered the whole of Siberia, is actively developing company in the European part of the country. In the cities (except Rostov-on-don, Volgograd and Voronezh), the company works independently, and in the spring of 2011 goes to the markets of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Here the project encountered an unexpected problem. Calls from call-center constantly ran into another question “Double what? Copy what?”. Investment in the development of maps of Moscow, according to Sysoev, amounted to “some tens millions roubles”: employees of the company for almost a year was the guide of the 300 thousand organizations of the capital. The surge in business 2GIS in 2009-2012 required the company to large investments in infrastructure and staff. Until 2011 the “Doublegis” in Novosibirsk there were seven offices in different parts of the city, and Alexander Sysoev decided to combine them under one roof. The company rented first four floors of a 22-storey business-center “sun city” in Novosibirsk, close to the metro (it was later leased five floors). At the end of 2014 “Doublegis” bought 12 floors of the building on the Sberbank loan. Own offices “Doublegis” work only in 13 cities, most of 282 cities covered by the franchisee. The principle is simple, says Sysoyev: the company selects potentially interesting cities to run 2GIS, and then finds a local partner to develop the business in this locality, and creates for him the map and guide of the city. Income “Doublegis” and its franchisees are generated through advertising. Minimum package of contextual advertising in the app and on the website in Moscow is 5.3 thousand rubles a month. Boris Levin, owner of 2GIS franchise in Astrakhan, Krasnodar and Sochi, said that the most difficult at the start to convince advertisers of the effectiveness of the product. “We are often told: “Stay in the market two or three years, then will come to you,” he says . — Sales growth began only three years after launch.
