MOSCOW, October 14. Russia has no regrets about joining almost 20 years ago to the Council of Europe (COE), said Wednesday the state Duma speaker Sergei Naryshkin at a meeting with the Chairman of the CE Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio. According to Naryshkin, Russia is ready to continue cooperation, despite the fact that PACE a year and a half ago, “wrote a shameful page” in the history of the organization, depriving the Russian delegation of voting rights.
“We don’t regret held 20 years ago, “the wedding”, I mean joining the Council of Europe, despite the fact that, unfortunately, the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe a year and a half ago, wrote a shameful page in the history of the Council of Europe”, – said the speaker of the state Duma.
He stressed that Russia is ready to continue constructive work with the Council of Europe, “aimed at overcoming artificially, we believe, created barriers, obstacles for this kind of open constructive dialogue in Europe, of creating a common humanitarian and legal space”.
Naryshkin recalled that in February 2016 will mark 20 years since then, as Russia became a member of the Council of Europe.
The Russian delegation in PACE in April 2014 was deprived of office because of Russia’s position on Ukraine and Crimea. In 2015, the parliamentary Assembly has twice adopted a decision on the possible restoration of the Russian delegation’s rights, but restrictions remain. Due to the inability to participate in voting and to work in the governing bodies of the organization, the Russian delegation suspended its participation in PACE activities.
