MOSCOW, October 20. In the Kremlin consider South Ossetia as an “independent state recognised by the Russian Federation”. Thus the President’s press Secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on the statement by the head of South Ossetia Leonid Tibilov about the necessity of holding a referendum on joining the Republic in the Russian Federation.
“It is an independent state recognized by the Russian Federation, with which we have diplomatic relations,” said Peskov. He refused to develop this theme: “I said what I said.”
“Actually, if I understand correctly, directly at the meeting (Statement by presidential aide Vladislav Surkov (this statement about a possible referendum) was not done,” – said Peskov. A Kremlin spokesman also stressed that “the fact that in South Ossetia there are a lot of supporters of integration with Russia, has long been known”. “We understand that this is exactly what Mr. Tibilov,” said Sands.
Tibilov stated about the need of a referendum
On Monday, as reported by the press service of the President of South Ossetia, Tibilov stated about the necessity of a referendum on accession of the Republic into the Russian Federation during a meeting with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov. “Today’s political realities are such that we must make a historic choice, should be reunited with brotherly Russia and for centuries to ensure the safety and prosperity of our Republic, of our people”, – has quoted its words a press-service.
Tibilov also said that the reunification with Russia is “age-old aspiration of the South Ossetian people who suffered this idea over two centuries of confrontation between Georgian chauvinism and fascism”.
“The referendum in the positive outcome of which I have no doubt, will allow to unite our people, will lead to renewal and revival of all positive processes in the society”, – said the President.
According to him, the organization of the referendum will involve wide layers of the population, leaders of political parties, public organizations. South Ossetian President emphasized that all steps to implement the results of the referendum will be made only in consultation with the Russian side.
The meeting with Surkov Tibilov was held at the government House in Tskhinval.
