Sanctions against Russian parliamentarians undermine the basic values of democracy and violate human rights, said the speaker of the state Duma Sergey Naryshkin.
MOSCOW, 21 Oct. Personal sanctions imposed by the European States against the Russian citizens, is absurd in its essence, said on Wednesday the speaker of the state Duma Sergey Naryshkin.
“The situation with personal restrictions from the EU against Russian citizens is a theatre of the absurd. They can be thought of as a measure of persecution for political reasons, and, of course, these actions violate fundamental human rights,” said Naryshkin on the meeting with the delegation of the faction of the European Parliament “European United left Nordic green left” in the state Duma.
According to him, restrictions in relation to parliamentarians to violate and undermine the basic values of democracy and European values.
“I can imagine is that when European officials and heads of state of the European Union took a similar decision, they probably didn’t even consult with MEPs. It is also sad, because this fact says about the attitude of European officials for representative government”, — said the speaker of the state Duma.
Sanctions against the Russian delegation to PACE were introduced in April last year because of the position of the Russian Federation on Ukraine and Crimea. Russian parliamentarians have been denied the right to vote, the right to participate in meetings of statutory bodies and monitoring activities. In 2015, the sanctions were renewed. The head of the PACE Anne Brasseur has previously stated that questions about the restoration of the credentials of the delegation of the Russian Federation may be reviewed in January 2016.
