A formal decision will be issued at the next session of the IPU in March 2016, said the Senator. He promised to strengthen Russia’s position in the inter-Parliamentary Union and “to enhance its role in world Affairs”.
MOSCOW, 21 Oct. The Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev said that in 2016 will take the position of Deputy Chairman of the inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
According to him, a formal decision will be issued at the next session of the IPU in March 2016.
“We will strengthen Russia’s position in this global organization and to enhance its role in world Affairs,” said the Senator.
According to the report of the Federation Council, Kosachev at the meeting of the IPU was elected to the Executive Committee — the highest governing body of the IPU. Kosachev explained that because it is in this geopolitical group “Eurasia”, according to the statutes of the IPU should take the position of Deputy Chairman of the organization.
According to the Senator, the formal decision will be taken at the next meeting of the Executive Committee of the IPU, to be held in March next year in Lusaka (Zambia). There will also be the next IPU Assembly.
Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) is the oldest international parliamentary organization founded in 1889. Now has 166 member countries, 10 international parliamentary organisations which are associate members. The headquarters is located in Geneva. The highest body is the IPU Assembly, which traditionally meets twice a year (spring and autumn). One of them is held in Geneva, the second in one of the countries-participants of the Union. Ordinary Assembly of the inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was held on 19-20 October in Geneva.
