Shoigu: Russia cannot prevent the proliferation threat of the IG and will continue to help Syria

MOSCOW, October 21. Russia could not prevent the growth of threats from terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG) in the territory of the Russian Federation and allies and will continue to help the legitimate authorities of Syria, said the head of the Russian defense Ministry army General Sergei Shoigu.

“In recent years significantly increased the activity of religious extremism under the banner of the so-called “Islamic state” (is prohibited in the Russian Federation – ed.). We cannot allow the proliferation of the terrorist threat and its spread to Russia and our allies,” – said Shoigu at a joint meeting of the Collegium of the defense ministries of Russia and Belarus.

The Minister said that Russia has decided to respond to the call of a friendly Syria and to provide the legitimate authorities of the country military assistance in the fight against ISIS. “Syrian government forces with our air support passed from the defensive to the offensive and liberated a part of its territory, which was under the control of militants of the “Islamic state”, – said Shoigu.

“We plan to continue to assist the legitimate government of Syria and to create conditions for the settlement of the conflict”, – said the head of the defense Ministry.

According to him, in a difficult international conditions it is necessary to form and develop effective mechanisms to ensure global security and to have a capable armed forces.

Russia from September 30 strikes on targets of terrorists in Syria, acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The operation involved over 50 aircraft and helicopters of Air and space forces of the Russian Federation. In addition, on 7 October, the militants attacked with a cruise missile ships of the Caspian flotilla. To participate in ground operations in Syria Russia has no plans.
