Churkin: it is too early to talk about sending observers to Jerusalem

The UN, on October 22. /Corr. Oleg Zelenin/. Talk about sending international observers to the temple mount in Jerusalem is still too early, but you need to consider possible action in response to the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This was stated on Wednesday by the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vitaly Churkin on the results of the closed-door meeting of the Security Council of the world organization.

“Too early to tell, but we should consider options for action”, – the diplomat said, answering a question about Russia’s position on this matter. Commenting on France prepared the draft presidential statement of the UN security Council, allowing the possibility of deploying an international presence, Churkin said that the Russian delegation is not yet acquainted with the text.

In the closed session of the security Council a report via video link from Ramallah was made by UN Secretary-General ban Ki-moon, during his visit to the region. “His key phrase was that he was not optimistic, he made a very good attempt, but the situation remains very difficult. From my point of view this means that we should intensify the efforts of the international community”, – said the permanent representative of the Russian Federation.

In turn, the permanent representative of the United Kingdom Matthew Rycroft described the briefing of the Secretary General as “very pessimistic”.
