MOSCOW, October 28. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad expressed readiness for political reforms, including constitutional, said the Federation Council member Dmitry Sablin, who was in this country in the delegation of Russian parliamentarians from 23 to 28 October on a humanitarian mission.
“Assad said that Syria is a free country, its people to decide how to live, without impositions from any party. He said he was ready for political reforms, including constitutional. Even if these reforms relate to him personally – the presidential election – he is willing to go. It was a surprise for us and, I think, for the world community”, – said Sablin in his interview to “Izvestia”.
On the eve of the presidential administration of Syria made a statement in which he stressed that the implementation of any policy initiative in the country will become possible only after the elimination of the threat of terrorism.
The Russian delegation also included representatives of the state Duma from the Communist party Alexander Yushchenko and Sergei Gavrilov. During the visit the parliamentarians had meetings with colleagues from the Syrian Parliament, head of government of the country by Wael al-Khalq and President Bashar al-Assad. The delegation was delivered to Syria about three tons of humanitarian aid for children.
