MOSCOW, 1 Nov. The Minister of trade and industry of Egypt Tarek Kabil and the Russian Ambassador in Cairo Sergei Kirpichenko at the meeting on Sunday discussed a number of economic issues, including the creation of a Russian industrial zone near the city of Port said, the Minister said the website Sputnik.
In August, during his visit to Moscow, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah said that the country expects soon to start practical steps to create a Russian industrial zone in the region of the Suez canal.
“An agreement was reached on creating a Russian industrial area in Port said, though earlier there were talks on such a zone near the Suez (Port said is at the Northern end of the Suez canal, the Suez — South — ed.)”, — he said.
According to him, the meeting discussed bilateral cooperation and the possible accession of Egypt to the Eurasian economic Union (EEU). The Minister noted that the next round of negotiations will take place in December.
The head of the Ministry of economic development Alexei Ulyukayev said earlier that the Russian side sees cooperation prospects in expanding cooperation in the energy sector of Egypt, including the construction on the territory of a nuclear power plant and the development of hydrocarbon fields, as well as modernization of existing industrial objects and construction of new enterprises in the field of mechanical engineering and processing of agricultural products.
In June at the St. Petersburg international economic forum (SPIEF), the former Minister of trade and industry Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour announced his intention to discuss with the head of Board of the Eurasian economic Commission (EEC) Victor Khristenko the question of accession of Egypt to the EEU.
