Volkswagen sales in Japan fell by almost half amid a scandal around this company

TOKYO, November 6. /Corr. Vasily Golovnin/. Catastrophic falling of sales of cars of Volkswagen AG occurred in Japan, where the German group was in the lead among foreign manufacturers. In October sales of its cars in the country fell by 48% compared to the same month last year, said on Friday the Japanese Association of automobile imports.

Just in October, Volkswagen has managed to sell in Japan, only slightly more than 2.4 thousand cars. In September its sales in the country also declined by more than 9%. At the same time in August, before the scandal over falsification of data about the cleanliness of the exhaust of his car, Volkswagen increased its sales in Japan by 16.4% compared with the same month last year.

The company since 2000 has been the absolute leader among foreign companies in the Japanese car market. However, in January-October, Volkswagen has slipped to third position, behind first and second place as its German competitors Mercedes – Benz and BMW.

Volkswagen is not selling in Japan its diesel models, which burst into a major scandal. However, it is believed that the buyers acted with a total lack of confidence in this brand.

Sales of Volkswagen cars in neighbouring South Korea in October also declined by 46% compared to a year ago.
