Lavrov: Russia and Lebanon for the creation of a truly global coalition to combat ISIS

MOSCOW, November 18. Russia and Lebanon agree on the need to build a truly global coalition against terrorism. This was stated by Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov following talks with Lebanese counterpart Gibran Basyl.

“We discussed terrorism in its broadest context. “Islamic state” (ISIS is a terrorist group banned in Russia) has already settled in Syria, Iraq, took root in other countries and announced the establishment of a Caliphate,” said the Minister.

“ISIS is our common threat. Agreed to in the UN security Council was a high priority to the creation of international legal base for combating this evil, to mobilize a truly global coalition in response to this call, – said Lavrov. – We will promote international efforts in this direction in line with the initiative (the Russian President) Vladimir Putin, made in new York”.

Fighting ideology

Gibran the Basil noted that to defeat terrorism in the middle East requires military action and the destruction of channels of financing of terrorists. “Elimination of terrorists requires military action, require the destruction of the financing of terrorism, the destruction of the ideology of terrorism,” he said.

In Beirut in the future do not exclude the possibility of appeal to Russia for help in combating terrorism. “I believe that everyone here understands that both Russia and Lebanon realize that this is a sovereign decision that should be taken by Lebanese, he said. – Lebanon may submit such an appeal”.

The foreign Minister of Lebanon also called on the international community to take a unified stand against the problems of the Middle East and adopt a single position regarding the fight against “Islamic state”. “About dialogue and diplomacy, we continue to call for a political settlement in the region, – said the Minister. – This applies to Iran, Syria and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.

“In accordance with our interests, we reached an agreement in Vienna, which says that Syria should be unified, secular, and the Syrians themselves should determine the future of their country,” said Basil. According to him, though the people of Lebanon “are not directly related to the political problem in Syria itself, but can’t stand aside from it, given the influx of refugees from Syria in Lebanon”.

“The international community must take a unified stand against all the problems of the Middle East, should take a unified stance against ISIS, and we fairly raised the issue, said the Lebanese Minister. – Believe that the elimination of terrorists requires military action, the exclusion of the financing of terrorists and fight against their ideology”.

“Russia’s role in the middle East is really positive. History teaches us that the Syrian and many other serious crises would develop in a multipolar world”, – he stressed.


“Islamic state” (ISIS) – an Islamist terrorist organization operating inside Iraq and Syria. Established on 15 October 2006 by the merger of 11 radical Sunni groups. The core group forming the militants, who fought with American troops during their stay in Iraq and with the forces of the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
