Churkin: the suspension of the implementation of the agreements – the revenge of Kosovo of Serbia for failing to UNESCO

United Nations, 20 November. /Corr. Oleg Zelenin/. The self-proclaimed authorities of the Republic of Kosovo of Serbia took revenge for the failed attempt of membership in UNESCO, to suspend the implementation in August reached agreement on establishing the Community of Serb municipalities in Kosovo (SMMC). This opinion was expressed on Thursday by the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vitaly Churkin at the meeting of the Security Council on Kosovo settlement.

According to the diplomat, the suspension of the Kosovo Albanian side for the implementation of this key agreement was the reason that the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, with the mediation of the European Union, has stalled.

“Can hardly be considered a coincidence that the decision to delay the establishment of the community was accepted by the Kosovars on the next day (November 10), after the UNESCO General conference rejected the application of Kosovo for membership in this organization. It seems that it is a banal revenge the Serbs who defended their position”, – said the permanent representative of the Russian Federation.

He noted that the mere fact of nomination of UNESCO in Kosovo on the background of the “categorical refusal” of Pristina to discuss in the dialogue with Belgrade the protection of the Serbian cultural and spiritual heritage “indicates the real level of cooperability of kosovoalbanian, and in fact – about their unwillingness to compromise”.

Russia’s permanent representative also expressed concern at the lack of progress in improving the “unenviable position of the Serb community” in Kosovo. “Failure to comply with the property rights of Serbs, especially those relating to property, undermines the economic basis of their survival. Extremely disturbing case is the litigation of the Kosovo Albanian legal entities with the Orthodox monastery of High Decani in an attempt to grab plots of land owned by the Serbian Orthodox Church”, – said Churkin.
