MOSCOW, 26 Nov. Possible restrictions on imports of fish to Russia from Turkey will not affect the price of fish products in the mass segment, said the President of the Russian Association of fishery enterprises, entrepreneurs and exporters (rnafee) Alexander Fomin.
Relations of Russia and Turkey are in crisis after Wednesday in Syria was wrecked Russian bomber su-24. The plane was shot down by a rocket type “air-air” with a Turkish F-16s over Syrian territory and fell in Syria four kilometers from the border with Turkey. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday instructed the government to prepare proposals for retaliatory measures of Russia, including restrictions on the import of goods.
“The price of fish in the mass segment will not be affected, there is a small amount,” — said Fomin, noting that in 2014 the Russian Federation imported from Turkey only 10.6 thousand tons of fish, and for the first ten months of 2015 — a total of 6.87 thousand tons. “The main volume of deliveries is a chilled sea bass and gilthead, i.e. the products of the premium segment, which comes to Moscow and St. Petersburg”, — said the head rnafee.
However, exports of these species in 2015 decreased by 30% as demand fell. “Seabream and seabass, as it “promoted” the product in the premium niche restaurants, and still someone buys — it is clear that the price will be affected. To quickly find a replacement (fish from Turkey — ed.) will be difficult: Europe banned, and Turkey “went up” due to this” — said the Agency interlocutor.
“Some countries will find, but it will take time, so maybe the price hike on these products. But, on the other hand, they’re already so expensive, nobody does not take” — said Fomin.
What economic measures need to be taken by Russia against Turkey?
- cancel large-scale joint projects like the “Turkish stream” and NPP construction
- to prohibit the activities of the Turkish company on the territory of the country
- to impose an embargo on a range of products
- to close airspace to Turkish aircraft
- all of the above options
- Russia should not adopt restrictive economic measures against Turkey
