Makarova delivered a report on the implementation of measures to eliminate accumulated environmental damage in the Murmansk region at the V International forum “Arctic: present and future” in the framework of the panel session “environmental management and environmental responsibility in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation”.

The Minister noted that the entire period of intensive development of the Russian North is associated not only with an unprecedented rate of industrial development, but also with irreversible human-induced impacts on land, on water bodies, including the Kola Bay.

“In its report, the Minister outlined a number of topical and urgent environmental problems in the region, including said contaminated territory of the disbanded military units and a large number of abandoned and sunken remains of ships and vessels on the coast, the need to eliminate sources of radioactive contamination and extremely hazardous waste”, — stated in the message.

It was noted that thanks to the efforts of the government of the Murmansk region in the event of liquidation of unauthorized dumps of vessels along the coast of the Kola Bay was included in the package of priority measures aimed at eliminating the consequences of pollution and other negative impacts on the environment resulting from economic and other activities approved by the government of the Russian Federation.

“Now among the priorities on liquidation of accumulated environmental damage in the Murmansk region — implementation of the same routines integrated in the framework of the state program of the Murmansk region “environmental Protection and reproduction of natural resources” by 2020″, — said Makarov. According to her, the programme envisages the linking of activities at the international, Federal, regional and corporate levels and financed from the budgets of various levels and extra-budgetary sources.
