Churkin: Russia hopes that Turkey will take no reckless steps in Syria

Russia hopes that the reaction of the members of the UN Security Council on the deployment of troops by Turkey in Iraq “cool hot heads in Ankara”, and they will not be reckless to undertake new steps, including in Syria. This was stated to journalists by the permanent representative of the Russian Federation at the world organization Vitaly Churkin after a closed meeting in the security Council.

“I hope that the concern shown by the UN Secretary-General and several members of the Security Council convened by us in the course of the discussion, will cool the hot heads in Ankara, and that they will resolve the situation in Iraq as it would satisfy the government of Iraq,” the diplomat said.

According to him, Russia also expects that the authorities of Turkey “will not be making any further rash steps, including in Syria”.

Vitaly Churkin also stressed that Turkey’s deployment of troops in Iraq came as a surprise to US and suggests that Ankara is unpredictable player.

He noted that on 7 December the delegation of permanent representatives of member countries of the UN Security Council visited Washington, where he met with U.S. President Barack Obama and a number of officials. “I came to the conclusion that these actions were for the Americans by surprise that, in General, it is strange that he says again that Turkey has several unpredictable player who can make the steps that will not only protest for the Iraqi cause, but can be puzzling and the United States,” said the diplomat.
