Ulyukayev: Russia may reduce or cancel import duties on agricultural products from Iran

NAIROBI, December 16. Russia may reduce or cancel import duties on agricultural products from Iran, told journalists after the meeting with the Minister of industry, mines and trade of Iran Mohammad Reza Nematzade the Minister of economic development Alexei Ulyukayev.

The meeting of the Ministers of the two countries was held on the sidelines of the 10th Ministerial conference of WTO members in Nairobi.
“We offer serious steps to improve conditions of trade for the Iranians, meaning the reduction and even the abolition of customs tariffs, especially for agricultural products – vegetables and fruits,” he said.

The Minister explained that at the meeting the parties discussed the subject of tariff regulation non-tariff and technical regulation and sanitary and phytosanitary standards, inspection bodies of the Russian selhoznaloga enterprises of Iran, which has a greater opportunity to export their products to Russia.
“They have a lot of enterprises interested in it. We are talking about a wide range of products like crop (vegetables and fruits, citrus, nuts, figs, cucumbers, tomatoes) and meat, poultry, fish and dairy products – yogurt, cheese”, – he said, stressing that “this, of course, the competence of the EEC, now we’re working on it”.

The Minister explained that “we can establish lower and even zero duties”.
He noted that the parties discussed the possibility of transition to preferential treatment in trade with Iran.

“Now we conduct work. Next week in Tehran will be the first Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, who signed the agreement on the promotion and protection of investments the government a week ago approved. This is an important thing, because investment now will be much more than before,” he said

In addition, we are creating a research team needs to decide on the feasibility of establishing a free trade area (FTA) with Iran.
“The timing is too early to say. Now begin the negotiations about preferential treatment, meaning end of options, the possibility of creating a free trade zone”, – stressed the Minister.
