The participants of the trilateral dialogue were close to solving the problematic issues on free trade zone between Ukraine and the European Union in the framework of the tripartite negotiations, but the decision was never adopted because of the position of Russia, said the representative of the European Commission.
BRUSSELS, 21 Dec –, Vladimir Dobrovolsky. The EU, Ukraine and Russia were close to resolving the issues on free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU tripartite talks, but the Russian side did not show the necessary flexibility, said the European Commissioner for trade Cecilia malmström.
“We were close enough to come to some practical solutions, and I think if you have the desire could do it. Today, however, there was not enough flexibility on the Russian side to do it. We were quite surprised,” said malmström reporters after a round of Ministerial negotiations.
She noted that the European side has proposed, “in particular, in the field of phytosanitary issues to work on veterinary certificates”. “We also offered to work on some transition periods with regard to standards,” said the Commissioner. According to her, the EC also “offered cooperation in the customs area”.
