Matviyenko hopes that in January Russia’s return of powers in PACE


The PACE itself looks for a way out “of the impasse where you played yourself”, depriving the Russian delegation of powers, said the speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.

MOSCOW, 24 Dec. The speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko hopes that at the January session of the PACE the Russian delegation will be returned to the full authority.

“We hope that at the January session of PACE will prevail, the position of several delegations, deputies about necessity of returning of powers of the Russian delegation,” she told reporters at a press conference.

According to Matvienko, the PACE itself looks for a way out “of the impasse where you played yourself”, depriving the Russian delegation of powers.

At the end of January 2015, PACE adopted a resolution that stripped the Russian delegation of voting rights, the right to participate in the work of the statutory bodies in the monitoring of the elections because of the situation in Ukraine. In addition to the deprivation of significant powers, the Assembly adopted a resolution in which demanded to cancel the “annexation of Crimea”, to release 24 hours a citizen of Ukraine Nadiya Savchenko — 21 requirement.

In response, the Russian delegation until the end of 2015, left the Assembly. At the January session is traditionally a place for reconfirmation of powers of delegations to the PACE.

As complicated relations between Moscow and PACE

Relations between Russia and the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe have cooled in April 2014 after the adoption of the PACE decision to deprive the Russian delegation’s voting rights, the right to participate in the meeting of statutory bodies and participation in monitoring activities of Assembly due to Moscow’s position on Crimea.
