Rosselkhoznadzor: Russia may ban exports of maize from the USA


MOSCOW, January 25. Russia may prohibit the supply of corn from the U.S. due to systematic contamination of American products quarantine for Russia object of diplodia tip blight of maize. This is stated in the message Rosselkhoznadzor.

“In the current situation, in order to maintain phytosanitary well-being, especially in terms of import of regulated products the Rosselkhoznadzor sent a letter to the American side on the need to eliminate delivery on territory of Russia contaminated us corn. In case of continuation of supply of infected products, the Rosselkhoznadzor reserves the right to consider the introduction of temporary restrictions on import of corn from America”, – stated in the message.

According to the analysis of phytosanitary risks, the potential damage from the importation and acclimatization of quarantine objects in territory of Russia is 10-15 billion rubles annually, said the Agency. “For the Russian Federation the zone of the greatest phytosanitary risk are the regions of maize cultivation and above all the North Caucasus where these diseases can not only acclimate, but also to create epiphytotic”, – explained in the message.

Now infected corn comes to Russia only for producing popcorn, said the Agency. Once again on 22 January 2016, the Rosselkhoznadzor reported the claims to a large consignment weighing more than 76 tons of corn for popcorn from the USA which arrived in the sea port of St. Petersburg. Then the inspectors identified external signs of disease production plants. After analysis, the experts confirmed contamination of products dangerous quarantine disease diplodia tip blight of corn.

The Rosselkhoznadzor also suspect the use of American corn for transgenic crops in the Russian Federation.
