Turkish Minister: Ankara can do great harm to Russia, refusing to import its wheat

ANKARA, 2 February. /Corr. Kirill Zharov/. The head of the Ministry of agriculture of Turkey, Faruk Celik States that in case of refusal to import Russian wheat, the damage to the Russian economy may amount to more than a billion dollars. The relevant Minister’s statements had led on Monday, the newspaper Hurriyet.

“Since January 1 the exports of vegetables to Russia have stopped. Russia buys from us in the year vegetables and fruits for $750 million we Have purchase only one item – wheat, $1.1 billion If we stop the imports from Russia, will inflict much more damage. But we do not, we are patient,” he said. Çelik added that “for what happened (in bilateral relations – approx. Corr) cannot be forced to pay farmers”.

Due to Russian sanctions and the overall situation in the economy, Turkish exports to Russia in 2015 has fallen by 40% in comparison with indicators 2014. According to observers, not least the economic measures of Russia influenced the fact that in January of this year, total exports of Turkey decreased by 14% compared with the same period last year.
