MOSCOW, February 7. The Ministry of natural resources intends to defend its interests in the UN to increase the boundaries of the Russian part of the continental shelf in the Arctic. Even though some experts doubt the Russian Federation submitted materials, the Ministry of environment has the potential to achieve a positive result. The head of the Ministry of ecology and natural resources Sergey Donskoy said in an interview with NTV.
Russia’s bid for an increase of the continental shelf in the Arctic will be considered by the UN in February 2016. We are talking about more than 1 million sq km of seabed. At the lowest estimates, this will allow to increase potential hydrocarbon reserves by 5 billion tons of conditional fuel. In the application it is emphasized that the Maritime border of Russia in the Arctic ocean is not part of the world ocean and continuation of the country’s territory.
