Threat map: why 57% of Russians in the stores only pay cash

More than half of Russians — 57% for payment of goods and services still use only cash. These are the results of the study NAFI, held in November 2015 in collaboration with United Card Services. For comparison, in 2013 this figure was 69%. Thus, the number of those who does not use plastic cards in two years decreased by 12%, but still remains quite high.

The study showed that one of the reasons why people prefer cash. Of those who choose cash payments, 46% do not pay cards in the Internet, because they consider it dangerous. Others (22%) don’t know how to pay online or consider (20%), it is harder than to pay cash.

This category of citizens does not pay cards in stores, because places won’t accept them — said about it (44%) of the respondents. But here, according to NAFI, security is of great importance. People are afraid of scammers (26%), fear that the card can be stolen (17%) or to spy on the PIN (14%), waiting for the erroneous write-offs and a long refund — 14% and 8% respectively. These issues were supposed to have multiple answers, so the sum of responses exceeds 100%.

As noted by the head of the research Department of the banking sector NAFI Irina Lobanova, the main problem is the low level of awareness about how to protect cards from fraud. Basically, she said, Russians use the simplest ways of protection from fraud: keep the PIN separately from the card, covering his hand when entering, keep the card separately from cash. On the fourth place in popularity, according to NAFI, is the service of SMS-informing.

At the same time with other security means the card most people are familiar bad. Only a third of Russians, according to Lobanova, you know that you cannot send Bank or card details to other persons, and this is one of the most frequent methods to get the data card. “When you pay for goods and services no one has the right to take the card away from its owner. This often takes place in cafes and restaurants. Although in the store, if the terminal is closer to the cashier, the card data can be time to take a picture,” she said.

The head of Department of plastic cards VTB 24 Alexander Borodkin considers ways to protect the money on the cards much more than cash. “The probability that a group of swindlers deceive the Bank security service, security service payment system, is lower than the probability to lose cash as a result of illegal actions,” he says.

In his opinion, the loss of the card or information about it is the loss of access to money and not money itself. “For the transactions on the cards in most cases one of the stolen cards a little. There is a second part of the data necessary for transactions (PIN-codes, passwords, 3d secure, etc.) that also need to get the attacker to access the money,” he recalls. In addition, most banks also allow customers to set limits on cards, which the client can manage on their own.

“Especially for online payments, you can limit the amount of withdrawal using the technology of setting limits, or to produce separately a second physical or virtual card that can be replenished only needed to buy the amount” — advises the head of Department of plastic cards VTB 24.
