MOSCOW, February 22. The cooperation between Russia and the U.S. in the fight against terrorism enters a new phase after reaching agreement on a ceasefire in Syria, the head of the Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev. This opinion he expressed to journalists, commenting on the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin that by agreement with the American side since midnight on 27 February in Syria should begin a truce.
The agreement on the ceasefire in Syria is “very important and, most importantly, joint diplomatic success of Russia and the USA”, which deserves “a strong and unanimous support of the UN security Council,” he said. “One way or another, the bilateral cooperation between Russia and the U.S. in the fight against terrorism has entered a qualitatively new phase, as had previously been in another phase transferred to the joint efforts of Russia and the United States regarding chemical weapons in Syria and nuclear programme of Iran,” the Senator said.
The current agreement, believes Kosachev, “may be the third compelling and positive example of the importance of cooperation between our two countries in the joint suppression of common threats”. “Cooperation, which cannot and should not be alternatives,” he said.
The MP also believes that the current arrangements need to draw conclusions “to those countries on the contradictions of the government and opposition in Syria, as well as the controversy between Russia and the US tried to play our game, which has no relation to the global challenges of counter-terrorism”. “We will monitor the reaction of those countries that are well known and which themselves have recently significantly discredited in the calculation of the protection by the United States. Very well, what did not work”, – concluded the head of the international Committee of the Federation Council.
Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama approved an agreement on ceasefire in Syria. It should start from midnight on February 27, strikes on terrorist groups will continue. About this informed the head of the Russian state.
He said that “until noon on February 26, all the warring parties in Syria must confirm to us or to the American partners of its commitment to the ceasefire”, after that “Russian and American military jointly on the maps will identify areas in which there are such groups”. Military operations against them by the Armed forces of Syria, Russia and the US-led coalition “will not be conducted”. “As for ISIL (banned in Russia organization “Islamic state” – approx.), “Dzhebhat EN-Nusra” (also banned in Russia) and other terrorist organizations recognized as such by the UN security Council – the cessation of hostilities completely eliminated. The impacts on them will be applied and further”, – concluded Putin.
