Poroshenko ordered to strengthen the military capabilities of Ukraine near the border with Crimea

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko ordered the Ministry of defence and the General staff of the Armed Forces to prepare proposals for a substantial strengthening of the military capabilities of Ukraine in the Kherson region and along the black sea coast. He stated this in his address to the nation, the text of which publishes a website of the Ukrainian President.

“Russia has significantly increased its military presence in the region, completes the transformation of the Peninsula with a blossoming international resort on a large military base that poses a threat, including nuclear, not only to Ukraine but to all countries of the black sea region”, — said Poroshenko.

On the website of the Ukrainian President stated that the appeal is confined “to the second anniversary of the beginning of resistance to the Russian occupation of Crimea.” In his speech Poroshenko stressed that “Crimea was, is and remains an integral part of the Ukrainian state”. According to him, Russia was preparing for the “annexation of Crimea” since 1991. “During the first twenty years the Ukrainian government, this threat was realized, but underestimated,” citatet Poroshenko.

The Ukrainian President also stressed that “very complex and promising process” to return the Crimea has already begun.

“To Refine our strategy for the reintegration of Crimea into Ukraine today, I was asked to prepare a special meeting of the Council of national security and defense. From the Cabinet of Ministers expect a detailed schedule of the protection of national interests of Ukraine in international courts, the involvement of an aggressor state to responsibility before Ukraine, as government and private Ukrainian companies”, — said Poroshenko.

“The obvious leading role of the Ministry of foreign Affairs in ensuring the political and diplomatic conditions for the return of the Crimea, in the preparation of the above mentioned claims and to maintain a regime of international sanctions against Russia resulting from its aggression against Ukraine in Crimea and Donbas,” said Poroshenko.

Crimea was joined to Russia in 2014. The decision was made based on the results of the referendum on 16 March 2014 in Crimea and Sevastopol. Then the occurrence of the region into Russia was supported by more than 90% of the inhabitants of the Peninsula. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that the annexation of Crimea is an implementation of the rights of local people to self-determination.

On 20 January the Minister of Finance of Ukraine Natalia Jaresko on the sidelines of the economic forum in Davos said that the authorities intend to launch an initiative for the return of Crimea. The next day the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree on the establishment of the return of the Crimea. In the appropriate structure, according to the document, includes, in particular, “work with all citizens who migrated from the temporarily occupied territories, the international relations service and the service for reintegration and de-occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea”.

The head of the MIA of Ukraine Arsen Avakov on Friday, February 26, in the program “Right to rule” said that Ukraine will create a special unit of the National guard, which will deal with the return of the Crimea to the Ukraine. “We need a new army, the new guard, the new police. And this now is the focus of the state of Ukraine. We need to recreate it, and then, in the presence of our will, the Crimea will be with us”, — said Avakov.
