The Finance Minister of Germany called on the EU not to become “toys in the hands of Putin”

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the social democratic European model scares Russian President Vladimir Putin, that is why Europe must resist attempts to divide it into individual countries, reports Reuters.

Speaking at the London school of Economics, the Minister declared that “soft power” of Europe close to Russia’s borders is seen by Moscow as a threat rather than the enlargement of the European Union or NATO itself.

“That’s why [Putin] is trying to weaken Europe, separating us, and tempting to speculate only in a narrow national framework. We should not become toys in his hands,” — said Schaeuble.
