The official U.S. state Department spokesman John Kirby at a press conference on March 4, commented on the statement of one of the senior representatives of the Syrian opposition Riyad the Hijab, which previously stated that the US often make concessions of Russia in Syria.
Kirby was responding to a question about whether he shares that view, said that he was not familiar with the application of Hijab, but “would not adhere to such language”.
“It’s not about concessions, it is about working with the Russians to get what we all want to see a peaceful Syria and a political process to stop this civil war,” said Kirby. According to him, the U.S. won’t negotiate with Russia 1C eye to eye” on all issues. “And I’m not even talking about what is happening outside Syria, and about what is happening inside Syria. We had, and is likely to continue disagreements with Russia because of various factors,” said Kirby.
At the same time, the state Department spokesman stressed that Russia has taken a leading role in the International support group for Syria (ISSG) and benefited. “They worked together, and they participated in the cessation of hostilities,” said Kirby.
“And again, in other issues we still have problems with them [with Russia]. But, this characterization of the American approach, just as “concessions”, in my opinion is inaccurate, and I totally disagree with these comments,” concluded Kirby.
