The Kremlin explained Putin’s refusal to participate in nuclear summit in Washington

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov explained the refusal of the head of gosudarstva Vladimir Putin uchastovat in the nuclear summit in Washington by a deficiency of interaction on this subject during the preliminary training. About this Peskov told reporters in reply to a question why representatives of Russia at the highest level do not take part in the summit, reports “RIA Novosti”.

“The issue of nuclear security is highly relevant, however in Moscow believe that the study of issues related to nuclear safety requires common and joint effort and mutual consideration of interests and positions during the preliminary work. A certain lack of interaction during preliminary study of the issues and themes of the summit we experienced, so in this case does not occur and the participation of the Russian side”, — said Peskov.

The nuclear security summit held in Washington from 31 March to 1 April, however, Russia refused to participate in it. In February, Deputy foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov said that Moscow excludes the possibility of continuing negotiations with Washington on reducing nuclear arsenals. “We reached the line at which the bilateral U.S.-Russian negotiations in this area were not possible for several reasons,” — said Ryabkov. According to him, this is due to the development of missile defense, as well as with the sanctions policy of the USA.

Advisor to U.S. President Ben Rhodes in an interview with reporters, said that “Russia’s decision not to participate [in the discussions on nuclear safety] at a high level, in our view, is primarily for her missed opportunity.” According to Rhodes, Russia, having decided not to participate in the nuclear security summit in Washington, “isolated itself”.
