Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad is ready to move early presidential elections. About it in interview “RIA Novosti”.
“It depends on the position of the Syrian people, do the people’s will to hold early presidential elections. If the will is there, for me it’s not a problem,” said Assad.
“In principle I have no problem with that, because the President can’t work without popular support. But if the President has popular support, he should always be ready for such step. I can say that fundamentally for us it’s not a problem,” said Assad. The Syrian President reminded that the demand of early presidential elections “has not been nominated as part of the ongoing political process”.
February 22, indicated Assad issued a decree on conducting parliamentary elections in Syria on 13 April. He did it a few hours after it was announced the agreement between Russia and the U.S. on the ceasefire in Syria.
Approved in December 2015 the UN security Council resolution on Syria has elections in the country within one and a half years.
Earlier at the talks in Vienna had developed a peace plan that included formulating a new Constitution before elections are held. Under the current Constitution, elections in Syria should take place in June 2021.
