Journalists found two offshore companies at Nazarbayev’s grandson

As reported in a new publication of the Centre for investigation of corruption and organized crime (OCCPR) and the International consortium of investigative journalists (ICIJ), the grandson of the President of Kazakhstan, Nurali Aliyev, owns two offshore companies registered in the British virgin Islands — Alba International Holdings and Baltimore Alliance Inc.

The documents, as stated in the publication on the website OCCPR, were received by the journalists of the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and represent the internal records of the company Mossack Fonseca.

The first of these companies, Alba International, according to the published documentation does not have any activities, except that “have a Bank account in Cyprus.” In September 2014 the owner of the company was another company, Invirogate Group. However, the publication OCCPR indicates that the international Alba International documentation contains information about the “true owner” of the company, and “on the basis of name, date of birth and photo attached to the file, obviously, is the grandson of Nazarbayev”.

Another shareholder of the offshore company, Baltimore Alliance, Aliyev was in 2008. At the same time the company has acquired a luxury yacht with an estimated value of more than $1.8 million, for which Aliyev allegedly chose the name “nomad”. In

Nazarbayev has previously made strong statements, urging businessmen not to hide funds in offshore accounts. “We raised many wealthy people — billionaires, millionaires. Flaunt photos in Forbes. Look beautiful, all painted, powdered, well-dressed. But all this money you allowed to earn Kazakhstan — the nation state. So let’s invest here. All offshore — all this nonsense”, — said Nazarbayev in January 2016 at the Congress of the ruling party “Nur Otan”.

Later the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Dariga Nazarbayeva, the President’s daughter and mother Nurali Aliyev, called on the businessmen paying taxes “not be greedy”, noting that Kazakhstan has a very liberal tax policy and “need to share”.

Nurali Aliyev in 2004, at the age of 19, became the President of the Kazakh company “Sugar center”. Later he was the Deputy Chairman of the Kazakhstan development Bank and worked in the administration of Astana. By the end of 2012 Kazakh edition of Forbes magazine put Aliyev on the 32nd place among the richest businessmen of Kazakhstan, estimating his fortune at $200 million (later the grandson of the President in the magazine ratings were not included).

Previously OCCPR and ICIJ has published information on offshore assets 12 former and current world leaders, hundreds of politicians and billionaires 29. Just leaked from the law firm Mossack Fonseca contains about 11.5 million documents. In offshore transactions, as stated in the investigation, dubbed “Panama”, involved people from the environment of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the family of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and other representatives of the global elite.
