In the statement by the permanent representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin, which leads to the press service of the permanent mission stated that Moscow has made to the security Council a draft press statement with a call to ensure the most representative character of the inter-Syrian dialogue. The diplomat explained that the Russian side is concerned about the lack of invitation to Geneva for Syrian Kurds.
According to Churkin, the draft statement as a result was blocked by some Western countries. “Its destructive contribution was also made by the Ukrainian delegation,” – said the envoy.
The diplomat expressed surprise with the debate.
Previously the foreign Ministry of Russia repeatedly insisted on the participation of Kurds in the Syrian talks In Moscow explained this by the fact that Syrians themselves should decide on whether their country is a Federation with autonomy including the Kurds.
The Kurds have not received invitations to the inter-Syrian negotiations in Geneva, neither in January nor in March 2016. Against their participation by Turkey, which regards the Kurdish formations as terrorist organizations.
The Kurds control a significant territory in Northern Syria: Hasaka province, Northern provinces of Aleppo and raqqa, as well as a small area of the province of Deir ez-Zor. In all those territories the Kurds confront mainly the militants of the “Islamic state” (banned in Russia as a terrorist organization).
