European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker upset with the outcome of the Dutch referendum in which an overwhelming majority voted against the ratification of the Association agreement of Ukraine and the European Union. This was stated at a briefing the representative of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, reports Reuters.
“The President is saddened,” said he.
However, Schinas noted that the referendum will not affect the large-scale EU deal on closer relations with Ukraine, and to analyze the results of the vote is a matter for the government of the Netherlands.
“The Commission remains firmly committed to developing relations with Ukraine,” — said the representative of the European Commission.
The referendum on the ratification of the Association agreement between Ukraine and EU was held in the Netherlands on the eve of the 6th of April. The final results will be announced on April 12, but according to preliminary data, compared with 61.1 per cent opposed, 38 per cent. The turnout threshold of 30% has been met, so the referendum was recognized as valid.
To the Kremlin the referendum called domestic affair of the Netherlands. As stated by the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, the Dutch show their attitude to the Association agreement between Ukraine and the EU, “they, therefore, have questions and mistrust, and they signal about it.” This Peskov said that the Kremlin does not consider it possible to intervene in this process.
Earlier Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote in his Twitter that he considers the results of the referendum in the Netherlands “indicator of attitudes of Europeans to the Ukrainian political system”.
After the referendum in the Netherlands, the press service of the President of Ukraine issued a statement in which the true aim of the organizers of the referendum is called “attack on the unity of Europe and to spread European values”. While the press service added that the head of state Petro Poroshenko emphasizes the Advisory nature of the vote in the Netherlands.
Earlier, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Marg Rutte has promised to reconsider the position of the Kingdom on ratification of the agreement on Association between Ukraine and the EU, if the voting results show the negative attitude of the majority of the Dutch to this document.
