The Russian car market continued to seek bottom


In the first quarter of 2016 sales of new passenger cars decreased by 16.9% to 319,1 thousand, follows from statistics of the Association of automobile businesses (AEB) said on Friday. In March, the drop in sales amounted to 10% (125.9 thousand cars).

In March, the dynamics of falling sales continued to slow down. In January it accounted for 29.1 per cent, in February to 13.4%.

Despite the slowing decline of the car market, Chairman of the AEB automobile manufacturers Committee Joerg Schreiber restrained comments on the results of March. In his words, which are presented in the press release of the Association, “the automotive market in General is still not in very good shape, although gradually moving to reach the bottom after many months of consecutive declines”. “Further progress in this direction largely depends on the macroeconomic environment and consistency of government’s efforts to stimulate demand in the market in the coming months,” added Shraiberg.

The leader of the market remains AVTOVAZ. In March the Tolyatti automobile plant sold 22.3 thousand Lada — 18.8% lower over the same period than a year earlier. While the top-5 most sold in Russia of new passenger cars were Lada Vesta (sales began in November of 2015), rising in the bestseller list from seventh to fourth place. Only in March 2016 in Russia it sold 4.6 thousand Vesta, which is almost three times more than in January 2016.

Selling the second of the novelties of AVTOVAZ — Lada Xray in March were mixed. Model enrolled dealers February 14, two weeks of the month were sold 937 cars. In absolute terms, sales of Xray in March rose by 63%, to 15, thousand (included in the top-25 best-selling cars), but relative — dreamed of 27.7%. While dealers noted the stock shortage of this model.

Korean competitors Lada showed multidirectional dynamics. Kia sales in March rose 2%, to 12.3 million vehicles, Hyundai has lost 21% (11 thousand).

The growth leader was the Ford: sales of the American manufacturer for the month increased by 120% to 4.1 thousand cars. 50% increase in UAZ (4.4 thousand). In the mass segment, the worst dynamics was the Datsun (-51%), SsangYong (-61%) and Mitsubishi (-45%).

For individual models, hits market in March became the Korean brands — Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio. The once-undisputed leader ratings AEB — Lada Granta has slipped to third place.
