German foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier would like to see the revival of the format “Big eight”. Such a statement he made ahead of the meeting of the foreign Ministers of the G7 countries in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
“I would hope that the G7 does not remain constant format, we must create conditions to return to G8”, — quotes the words of Steinmeier, the German newspaper Zeit.
At the same time, he noted that this year to return to the G8 format will not work. As preconditions for returning of Russia in “the Big eight”, he called for contributions from Russia to a political solution of the Ukrainian conflict and the continuation of a constructive role of Moscow in establishing peace in Syria.
“It is obvious that no serious international conflict cannot be solved without participation of Russia”, — said Steinmeier. Referring to Syria, he added: “Now, in the course of the year we will be looking, will Russia to fulfill this constructive role. And then, of course, within the G7 we will discuss the terms and conditions of return”.
In November of last year, Steinmeier has called the conditions of returning of Russia in “group of eight”. Then he said that Russia may again become a member of the G8 only after the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine and the continuation of cooperation with the West on Syria. Prior to this, in June 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called “unthinkable” in the current environment, the return of Russia in the G8.
