Chizhov: “Nord stream-2” is a purely commercial project

“Nord stream-2” is a project launched on the initiative of European energy companies, the concern of some countries about its implementation is connected with Ukraine, said Russia’s permanent representative at the EU Vladimir Chizhov.

MOSCOW, 11 APR. “Nord stream-2” is a purely commercial project, all objections associated with its construction, politicized, said Monday the Agency Sputnik, Russia’s permanent representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov.

The project “Northern stream-2” has caused resentment on the part of some EU countries, including Poland and the Baltic States, who fear that the project will strengthen the dependence of the European energy sector on Russian supplies. At the same time, Germany announced that construction of the pipeline will benefit the entire European society and will ensure energy security of the 28 countries of the European Union, says Sputnik.

“Construction of the “Nord stream-2” is a purely commercial project. It is not an invention of the Kremlin, as he said to some people. As such, it is not even the initiative of the Russian “Gazprom”. This project launched at the initiative of the European power companies” — said Chizhov.

He also added that the concerns of several countries regarding the implementation of the project connected with Ukraine.

“In their eyes “Nord stream-2″ can carry great political significance, at the same time not excluding economic, as Russia pays Ukraine for the transit and, obviously, this transit must be interrupted and stopped. In this case, the country expressing support for the current Ukrainian government will be forced in any way to fill the financial gap,” said Chizhov.

The project “Northern stream-2” involves the construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany. Gazprom will own 50% in the project, European companies, OMV, BASF, Engie, Shell, Uniper (isolated from E. On) — 10%.
