Prime Minister of the Netherlands was asked to postpone the refusal from the Association with Kiev

During the debate in the Dutch Parliament, opposition parties demanded Rutte immediately withdraw its signature under the Association agreement with Ukraine, indicating the results of the referendum in which the majority of participants said “no”. But the Prime Minister asked to postpone this decision and spend with foreign Minister Bert Koenders negotiations with the EU. According to him, Brussels should take into account the position of residents of the Netherlands. Otherwise, the country will not ratify the document, according to TV channel NOS.

Rutte promised the deputies that the decision will be made by June, and the final answer may be delayed by a referendum in the UK, whose citizens must speak out about the country’s membership in the European Union.

The Prime Minister told the MPs that the immediate withdrawal of the signature may lead to the fact that the Netherlands will be excluded from the negotiation process on the Ukrainian question.

Active supporters of the recall signatures under the Association agreement made by the socialist party and the nationalist Party of Freedom, who came to the debate with the slogan “no means No”. “This will be outright deception of voters, if the government will ignore the results of the referendum”, – quotes the leader of the Freedom Party Geert Wilders, newspaper De Telegraaf.

For a review of the signatures were made by including the opposition Christian democratic party, who previously played for cooperation with Ukraine. The representative of the party “Democrats 66” during the debates pointed to the need to respect the opinion of voters, despite the fact, the reasons why they said the referendum is “No”.

Representatives of Pro-government parties in their speeches highlighted the complexity of the situation, given that we are talking about international agreement. The MP from the ruling people’s party for freedom and democracy Han ten brook pointed out that we have to accept the fact that 70% of the inhabitants of the Netherlands, in principle, ignored the referendum.

April 12 election Commission of the Netherlands has announced the official results of the referendum, in which 61% of participants opposed the EU Association with Ukraine. The turnout was 32.2% (with a required 30%).

The Association agreement between Ukraine and the EU consists of seven parts. It spelled out the issues of the reciprocal integration of Kiev in the space of the Union, in particular in the political, economic and other spheres. Political block of agreement was signed in March 2014 (from Kiev the document was signed by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk), and economic — in June of the same year. This part of the agreement was signed by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

To date, the document was approved by the European Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, as well as all member countries of the EU (including the Netherlands). However, the final document will come into force after ratification by the Council of the European Union, which brings together the 28 Ministers of member countries of the EU.
