The ECHR lawsuit against Russia because of the ban of the Mejlis

The Minister of justice of Ukraine Pavel Petrenko has announced plans of Ukraine to send to the ECHR another appeal against Russia in connection with the prohibition of activities of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, reports “Interfax-Ukraine”.

“Based on the events that happen around the Majlis, we have already prepared a draft of the international Declaration “Ukraine vs Russia” on the illegality of the ban of the Mejlis of the Russian government, now coordinate it with our colleagues and lawyers who cooperate with the Majlis”, — said the Minister.

According to him, this statement will be the fifth directional Ukraine against Russia in the ECHR. Petrenko also asked the head of Mejlis Refat Chubarov to update the list of those persons coorientation involved in the decision on banning of the Mejlis. He stressed that the Ministry of justice will initiate before the government the inclusion of these individuals in the Ukrainian sanctions list and offer to include them in the international sanctions list

In late April, the Crimean Tatar Mejlis was recognized by the Supreme court of the Crimea extremist organization and banned in Russia. A lawsuit about this was filed by the Prosecutor of the Crimea Natalia Polonskaya. According to her, if now “members of the Majlis or its representatives will carry out any activity contrary to the decision of the court, they will be held accountable”.

The Ukrainian foreign Ministry has expressed in this regard a strong protest. The head of European diplomacy Federica Mogherini called the ban of the Mejlis of the “attack on the rights of the Crimean Tatars as a whole.”
