Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov commented on the initiative on the accession of Montenegro to NATO, approved yesterday in Brussels. “In General, the further expansion of NATO is more a process with a negative sign. This process is fraught with further increase of the degree of tension on the continent,” he told reporters correspondent .
Yesterday at a meeting of foreign Ministers of countries-members of NATO have signed in Brussels the Protocol on the accession of Montenegro to the Alliance, which provides the Republic observer status at the meetings.
The signing of the Protocol starts the mechanism of transformation of Montenegro into a full-fledged member of NATO, however, it required the ratification of the document by all 28 member countries of the Alliance. According to the NATO official, this process can take up to two years.
The Russian foreign Ministry has called the artificial “retraction” of Montenegro in NATO. The official representative of the Ministry Maria Zakharova said that the signing of the Protocol “confirms the desire of Brussels to maximally speed up the entrance process and make it irreversible”.
Previously Peskov said that “the continued expansion of NATO” cannot fail to lead to “retaliatory actions” from Moscow, and Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the decision on adoption of Montenegro in the Alliance is artificial.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday after signing the Protocol on accession of Montenegro to NATO, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that any possible sanctions and retaliatory measures of Russia on the accession of Montenegro to the Alliance are undue.
