The Association agreement between the EU and Georgia and Moldova will enter into force on 1 July


The foreign Affairs Council of the European Union on Monday completed the ratification of the Association agreement between Georgia and the EU, reported the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Georgia. According to the Agency, now the agreement will enter into force “in next month or in early July”. The Ministry of foreign Affairs and European integration of Moldova also said that the agreement on EU Association with Moldova and Georgia will enter into force from 1 July this year.

“[The head of European diplomacy Federica] Mogherini announced today that at a meeting of the EU Council on foreign Affairs will approve the decision on the entry into force of the agreement on EU Association with Moldova and Georgia from 1 July”, — is spoken in the message of the Moldovan authorities.

The Minister of foreign Affairs and European integration Mondayyy Andrei Galbur, taking part in the meeting, stressed the need to strengthen cooperation with Eastern partners in connection with internal and external risk, said the Ministry.

In the message the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Georgia noted that the signing of the Association agreement is “another important date for relations between the EU and Georgia, as the Association agreement “will become the primary legal framework for cooperation on a new and higher level.”

“The political Association of Georgia and the process of economic integration, which include the introduction of European political, economic, social and legal standards, will be irreversibly and in full swing”, — stated in the message the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Georgia.

In June 2014, Georgia and the EU signed the Association agreement. In February of this year the European Commissioner for migration, home Affairs and citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said that the European Union may cancel the visa regime for Georgia by the summer of 2016. “The European Commission is preparing to send a legislative proposal to the European Parliament and member countries [of the EU]. The final political decision should be taken by the European Council and the European Parliament, after submission of a legislative proposal. This might happen in the summer, and perhaps even earlier”, — said the diplomat .
