The official representative of the European Union, Margaritis Schinas said on Monday about the possibility of expansion of the European sanctions against Russia, reports Bloomberg. “Sanctions could be lifted if Russia will fulfill its commitments. But we are also willing to go to further measures to increase the price for Russia if its actions would require such approach”, — she told journalists in Brussels.
Schinas stressed that the G7 summit in Japan, the participants supported the continuation of the sanctions. “Last week at the G7 summit leaders recalled that the duration of clear sanctions linked to the full implementation by Russia of the Minsk agreements and respects the sovereignty of Ukraine”, — she said.
At the end of July expires economic sanctions against Russia, and the EU intends to extend them for another six months, reminds Bloomberg, citing European officials.
Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, speaking at the G7 summit, said it is too early to lift sanctions. In the final communiqué refers to the possibility of increased sanctions if “Russia’s actions demand it”.
German foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned that in Europe, there is opposition to the extension of the sanctions, and agree on a common position will be difficult. For decisions on sanctions require the approval of all 28 EU members.
