Starting in 2016, the hackers stole VTB 35 million rubles every year losses reduced banking group, told journalists the head of VTB Andrey Kostin after conducted under the guidance of the head of the government Dmitry Medvedev meeting on issues of information security in credit-financial sphere.
“The number of stolen money have decreased every year, and while the damage is not material in the long run. But this does not mean that there is no threats, there are attempts and intentions,” said Kostin, noting that many people now do not realize how dangerous these kinds of crimes (quoted by “Interfax”).
At the same time in the financial sector as a whole, according to Kostin, there is a “surge of cybercrime”, requiring enhanced measures to combat it.
“We have seen a surge of cybercrime, aimed at to actually steal money with the help of modern tools and technology. Therefore, the task is very relevant, the amount and the number of crimes is rising sharply,” said Costin (quoted by “RIA Novosti”).
The head of VTB, in particular, explained that because of the shortcomings of the Russian legislation even caught hackers often remain unpunished.
“People often think that it’s kind of like a small misdemeanors are punished and they, as a rule, the maximum probation,” — said the head of VTB, noting that the findings of the Prime Minister meeting to begin work on amendments to the legislation and the creation of a unified system, in which banks and law enforcement agencies will work together to combat cyber criminals.
“Today we launched this question, an understanding of the importance there at all. I think we will soon see serious progress on this issue”, — said Kostin.
Earlier on Friday, Dmitry Medvedev also stated the need to share with the banking community system of measures for combating cybercrime.
“The problem is not solved simply by arrests, although it is the result of joint work of specialists in the field of security, law enforcement. Very often, particularly dangerous, attacks by hackers not only aimed to steal money, what is also sad, but often the meaning of these attacks is to undermine trust, frustrate any significant events or programs, simply put, to harm anyone. In Russia the damage from such crimes is also growing. Experience and strength to confront this phenomenon are still clearly insufficient,” — said the Prime Minister.
Medvedev called on business to offer their ideas, which can contribute to the effectiveness of the fight against cyber threats.
Wednesday, June 1, senior Vice President of VTB Dmitry Nazipov, who heads the Department of information technology of the Bank, announced that in the fall of 2015, VTB has been the most ambitious in the history of monitoring DDoS attack, however, did not pay the cyber criminals for ending the attack and managed to cope with the problem without payment of ransom.
