State prize for outstanding achievements in humanitarian activities for 2015 was awarded to the Director of the Mariinsky theatre, conductor Valery Gergiev, follows from the decree (.pdf) of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, which was published on the Kremlin website on Thursday, June 9.
The President also signed decrees on awarding with state prize in the field of literature and art Director of the Maly drama theatre of Lev Dodin and the film Director Sergei Ursulyak and the artistic Director of the Kuban Cossack choir Viktor Zakharchenko. Awarding of the laureates of the state prize will be held in the Kremlin on 12 June.
Gergiev has previously received two national awards in 1994 and 1999. In 2013, President Putin awarded Gergiev the title of hero of labour of Russia. He also has government awards of Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Japan, the honorary title of “Artist for peace of UNESCO.”
In may 2016 the orchestra of the Mariinsky theatre under Valery Gergiev gave a concert in the liberated from the militants “Islamic state” (banned in Russia) Syrian Palmyra. Before the concert, Gergiev showed the audience the appeal of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, in which he thanked the musicians for the amazing humanitarian action”. Putin said that considering the concert as a token of gratitude, memory and hope, of gratitude to everyone who is fighting terrorism, not sparing even his life.”
