Angela Merkel has proposed to increase spending on defense from external threats

Speaking at an economic conference in Berlin, Merkel said that the EU could not protect itself from external threats, and is forced to rely on assistance from the United States, reports Reuters. “I am sure that a country like Germany, which spends on defense 1.2% of GDP and the United States, who spend 3.4% of GDP should move towards a unified performance”, – said the Chancellor.

While Merkel has indicated that she expects from other members of the EU that they will also bear the burden of defensive expenditure in the long term.
