In Lithuania re-launched the mandatory army conscription. The corresponding law adopted by the Parliament last week, on Tuesday signed the country’s President Dalia Grybauskaite. This is stated in the press service of the head of state.
The amendments will enter into force on 1 September. Every year for military service planning to bring in 3500-4000 people. Military expect that this measure will provide a vital reserve and to equip units.
The law introduces a mixed model in the armed forces of Lithuania. “The mixed model, when the army is composed of professionals and conscripts, creates a closer connection between society and the military. “It helps to better understand the need to prepare for the defense, which is the most effective deterrent,” — said in the message.
The press service also noted that, according to surveys, the return to universal conscription supports 68% of the population. 75% of residents support the passage of life of your loved ones.
Military conscription was abolished in Lithuania in 2008. In February last year, the state Council of Lithuania on defense decided that the universal service should be returned. This was due to the worsening geopolitical situation in the region.
In March last year Grybauskaite signed the law on the temporary return call. But then it was that conscription will be necessary within five years. The first call took place in autumn 2015.
