Vice-Chancellor of Germany has canceled a meeting with Putin over Brexit


In the Kremlin confirmed that the meeting of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin with the Vice-Chancellor, Minister of economy of Germany Sigmar Gabriel, next week, will not take place because of the cancellation of the visit of Vice-Chancellor to Moscow because of Brexit. “Yes, really,” — said “RIA Novosti” press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov in response to a question.

Earlier, the representative of the Ministry of economy of Germany said that “due to recent events in the UK and events Monday in the first of the week he [Gabriel] will not go to Russia.”

That the Vice-Chancellor is going to come to Moscow to meet with Russian leader, June 21, he told the German newspaper Rheinische Post, citing sources in the German government. The meeting was supposed to be already the second this year. The last time Putin and Gabriel met in October 2015 in Novo-Ogaryovo.

As wrote “Kommersant”, Gabriel oversees the gas pipeline project Nord Stream-2, which Berlin promised political support is still under discussion. The newspaper recalled that in recent times Germany has stepped up efforts to create such political conditions in the European Union, under which Nord pipeline could be implemented.

June 23 in the UK held a referendum, the results of which 51.9 percent were in favor of the Kingdom’s exit from the European Union.

As stated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel next Monday, June 27 in Berlin there will arrive the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to discuss the situation.
