Former commander of the operation in Syria, he headed the southern military district


Colonel-General Aleksandr Dvornikov will serve as the acting commander of the southern military district. This was stated by the Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu, “Interfax”. Janitors previously commanded the Russian forces in Syria.

The previous commander of the YUVO Colonel-General Alexander Galkin will continue to serve in the Central apparatus of the Ministry of defense.

Janitors commanded the Armed forces of Russia in Syria from September 2015, notes TASS. Prior to that, he held the post of chief of staff — first Deputy commander of the Central military district. In turn, Galkin led the troops of the southern military district since 2010.

In mid-March the President of Russia Vladimir Putin presented Dvornikova the gold star of Hero of Russia.

The General-the Colonel for the first time publicly spoke about his involvement in the Syrian operation in an interview to “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”. Prior to this, as noted by the publication, only a limited number of people knew that he was head of the Syrian group.
