Ankara may give Russia permission to use the Incirlik air base for operations against the “Islamic state” (organization banned in Russia), said the Turkish foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, in an interview with TV channel TRT.
“We will cooperate with all who oppose ISIS. We fight, and we opened a base in Incirlik for those who want to actively participate in it, ” he said.
“Why shouldn’t we just cooperate with Russia? IG is for all of us is the enemy and must be fought with him,” added the Minister. He recalled that the theme of joint struggle against ISIS he discussed with the foreign Minister of Russia. “This is the subject we agreed with Sergey Lavrov,” — said Cavusoglu.
The foreign Ministers of Russia and Turkey held a 40-minute meeting in Sochi last Friday. It took place amid a sharp improvement in the relations between the two countries, which occurred after a telephone conversation between presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Russia has decided to lift sanctions imposed against Turkey, including the ban on tourist travel.
