Merkel said the desire to lift sanctions against Russia


Merkel said on Monday about the desire to achieve the lifting of sanctions against Russia at a campaign rally in Eastern Germany, according to Bloomberg. “We all want good relations with Russia”, — said the head of the German government.

The Chancellor recalled that many people want the lifting of sanctions against Russia. She added that she also “wanted it.”

Merkel assured the protesters that the government “is making extreme efforts to achieve progress.” She explained that in this case we are talking about access of Ukrainian authorities to the state border, for which all parties involved “need to compromise”.

The Chancellor expressed at the rally of his party “Christian democratic Union”, which in September will be elections to the Parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier said earlier about the possibility of a phased lifting of sanctions in case of progress on conflict settlement in the Donbass. He stressed that “nobody is interested in the economic destruction of Russia”.

In late June, the European Union decided to extend sanctions for another six months, from 31 July to 31 January 2017. Commenting on the decision, Merkel stressed that it is “unfortunately necessary”, as the agreement on ceasefire in the East of Ukraine still does not run.

Last Friday, the Chancellor together with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and French President Francois Hollande discussed the settlement process of the Minsk agreements. In the message of the Kremlin it was noted that the parties expressed “concern about the recent increase in violations of the ceasefire regime in the Donbas.”

In Moscow blamed the escalation on the Ukrainian side. Putin has urged its partners in the negotiations to influence the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to ensure the smooth implementation of the Minsk agreements”.

In the message of Department of the Federal Chancellor said that the participants agreed on the need to accelerate the implementation of the Minsk agreements. In Berlin stressed that the special importance of long-term stabilization of the situation in the sphere of security and the creation of opportunities for the local elections.
