The Moscow city court extended the special correspondent Alexander Sokolov’s arrest to 1 year, 3 months, said the lawyer Olga Dinze. Consideration of the petition of the investigation went on for two days. The falcons will remain in custody until at least October 28.
Sokolov was arrested on 29 July 2015. With him involved in the case are former editor of the newspaper “Duel” Yury Mukhin and his colleagues Valery Parfenov and Cyril Barabash. They were charged under article 282.2 of the criminal code (organization of an extremist organization).
The court also extended until the end of October Mukhin house arrest and stay in prison Parfenov.
Sokolov himself denies his guilt and insists that he is being persecuted including for professional services. “It seems that the suppression of freedom of speech and thought under the guise of “fighting extremism” has reached a qualitatively new level — a complete violation of the laws and common sense,” the journalist said at the meeting of the Moscow city court.
According to investigators, Sokolov, “positioning themselves as opposition-oriented face to the public authorities”, has registered the website of the initiative group for the referendum “For the responsible authority”. As stated in the materials of the case, he and the other defendants “under the pretext of the organization and conduct of referendum” was going to continue the activities of the movement “army of the will of the people” (AVN) recognized by the court as extremist organization in the fall of 2010.
In the original prosecution stated that the defendants were going to spread extremist materials, and their actions threatened the political system of the country: they allegedly called for the overthrow of the government and the loosening of the political situation. In the last edition speaks only of the distribution of materials without specifying the purpose and consequences of this.
“What materials are deemed extremist by the court, I was distributing, the investigation does not indicate, but are placed in a rebuke to the “opposing views”, that is, we are accused of thoughtcrime” — said Sokolov during the meeting.
Earlier Sokolov complained about the actions of the investigation and unjustified continued detention. He sent an appeal to the Commissioner for human rights Tatyana Moskalkova. On 17 June, the Ombudsman said that he had forwarded the complaint of the journalist to the Prosecutor. Treatment Sokolova will also consider the European court of human rights.
In the complaint to Moskalkova Sokolov noted that the harassment began after protection of the candidate dissertation on the theme “the Impact of rent seeking on investment corporations” where he examined in particular the issue of corruption and mismanagement of funds in the implementation of mega-projects with state corporations Rosnano, rostech, “Olympstroy” and “Rosatom”.
In November the human rights center “memorial” recognized Sokolova, Mukhina, Barabash and Parfenov political prisoners and demanded an end to the case against them. In December, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin at a big press conference in response to a reporter’s question about who is in jail Sokolov has promised to investigate the situation. About Sokolova: if he sits for some of the revelations about the East, if that’s the case, of course, I can help your publication,” — said Putin.
