The head of “Naftogaz of Ukraine” has accused Russia of “banal blackmail”

The decline in the last days of natural gas transit through the gas transportation system (GTS) of Ukraine is Moscow’s pressure on Kiev, said the head of “Naftogaz” Andrey KOBOLEV on air “5 channel”. “The transit volumes have fallen even more, they are now a record low. We associate with the pressure that the Russian Federation to Ukraine, “Naftogaz of Ukraine” with the aim, firstly, to minimize the income from this business, and secondly, I think that’s part of the tactics of promoting Nord stream-2″, — he said (quoted by “Interfax”).

As writes “Interfax” with reference to operational data of PJSC “Ukrtransgaz”, 24-25 July, the transit of gas through Ukraine’s GTS decreased to 154-155 million cubic metres of gas per day compared to 180-210 million cubic meters in the first two decades of July. In addition to reducing transit volumes Russia has reduced the pressure at the inlet of Ukraine’s GTS, which creates certain technological challenges to “Ukrtransgaz”, said Kobolyev.

“Until these problems are efficiently solved, but it seems to me that the Russians want to do everything possible to prove to our European partners that Ukraine cannot be a transit country, and they now began to banal blackmail us and them”, — said the head of “Naftogaz”.

According to Kobeleva, he was sent to the European Commission a letter with a proposal to collect monitoring group in the framework of preliminary reaction with the aim to analyze the situation and fix the failure of the Gazprom contractual obligations to supply gas to the Ukrainian gas transportation system and make the decision that is associated with this situation.

On the eve of the US Ambassador to Ukraine Jeffrey Payette said that Kiev managed to destroy the energy weapon. “The Ukrainian authorities over the past few years, in fact, destroyed the energy weapon of Moscow, which used gas. Last winter was the first in history when Ukraine got rid of gas dependence”, — the diplomat noted. According to Payette, the gas ceased to be a tool of manipulation and “Naftogaz” can now buy from Russia the fuel in the event if it believes the price is acceptable. “Ukrainians are no longer in a situation when the Kremlin is using energy as a weapon, as a tool of manipulation of the Ukrainian politicians to ensure that they took the right decision,” the Ambassador said.

A week ago KOBOLEV said that Naftogaz is ready to resume trilateral talks with the European Commission and “Gazpom” the timing of deliveries of Russian gas. Prior to that, Vice-President of the EC energosoiuz Maros Sefcovic urged Gazprom and Ukraine to agree on gas supplies.

In early July, the representative of the company “Naftogaz Ukraine” Yuri Vitrenko said that the resumption of purchases of Russian gas by the Ukrainian side insists on signing of binding documents that would formally protect “Naftogaz” from the risks.
