Trilateral summit of the presidents of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia was held for the first time. In February to conduct it was proposed by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. In Moscow, the initiative was supported. Aliev greeted the guests at the contemporary arts Center behalf of his father, Heydar Aliyev, built by the famous architect Zaha Hadid.
“All States face similar challenges: the ongoing global economic crisis, the continuing tension largely present at our borders”, — said at the meeting of Vladimir Putin. In these conditions Russia in this format considers it necessary to intensify information exchange about activities of terrorist organizations, to effectively monitor the traffic of weapons and terrorists, Putin said.
“No country alone can face the current challenges,” shared the President of Iran Hassan Rouhani. He stressed that the new format of cooperation is not directed against another state, and creates a framework for regional cooperation between our States”.
The countries agreed to deepen cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism, as well as economic cooperation, including support for the integration of energy networks.
The new format opens the possibility of cooperation on a wide range of opportunities ranging from political coordination to discuss concrete projects with a focus on transportation and energy, said at a press conference the Minister of foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.
“On a global scale is a very important meeting took place”, – was generous in his praise of the Azerbaijani foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov. The next meeting will be held next year in Iran, and before that the parties agreed during the year to continue consultations at the level of departments, to hold a trilateral meeting of the heads of the intergovernmental commissions
Summit need all three countries, said the chief editor of the magazine “Russia in global politics” Fyodor Lukyanov. “Iran and Russia are the two main neighbor of Azerbaijan. The summit participants discussed and practical project — the transport corridor “North-South” and one of its elements — Iranian railway from the Rest of Azerbaijan in Astara. Corridor “North-South” needs to join the Indian Mumbai and Saint Petersburg. Along this corridor the freight will be delivered on 10 days faster than through the Suez canal, officials say.
Railway from Rest to Astara is not yet built, its length is 172 km At the summit, according to Russian Minister of transport Maxim Sokolov, obaidalla construction and financing. However, concrete results negotiators have not yet come. Sokolov confirmed that Russian Railways is interested to become the operator of the construction of the railway, however no specific parameters were discussed.
